Neon Genesis Evangelion: The End of Evangelion (1997)

Manga Entertainment's 2002 DVD release of the movie contains some noticeable changes from the original film. In the English dub for instance, 'splat' sound effects were dubbed into the scene of Misato shooting a trooper in the head and the scene in which the mass-produced Evas explode. Additionally in the dub, a shot in which a trooper attacks a NERV member with a flamethrower now has the added line 'Hit 'im again!'. Finally, a set of translated credits set to the song 'THANATOS ~ If I Can't Be Yours' is shown after the film's conclusion, but unlike the credits appearing halfway through the movie, these credits are shown in the standard 'scrolling' fashion. (The original Japanese version of the film has no credits at the end.) These and other alterations are explained by Amanda Winn Lee, the writer, producer and director of the English version, in the DVD's commentary track. However, many fans of the series carry animosities toward Winn Lee for authorizing such changes, and the DVD was criticized for its poor picture quality and errors in the subtitle translation.

  • If I Can't Be Yours' playing. Episode 26 ends with a black screen. In the 'Genesis 13 and 14' home video edition, each episode has its own set of credits scrolling against a different background. Episode 25's credits play to an abridged version of THANATOS, while Episode 26 (to the dismay of many) was given its own set of credits, playing to a sped up version of 'Jesus bliebt meine Freunde'. (b. A 'preview' for episode 26 was added after the first set of credits. This was not present in the theatrical version. (c. Before Shinji begins strangling Asuka within his psychological montage, the kanji for 'No' appears in a word bubble beside Asuka's face in response to his request. In the original theatrical version of the film, the word was spoken.

    'WatchDub has a comprehensive list of anime shows. There are full episodes listed in order by episode so you can watch one after the other. They even have mirrors so if one video feed doesn't work, you can always try another source. I was able to find the full Neon Genesis Evangelion series in HD!'

Neon Genesis Evangelion is uncommon in the anime world because it is the anime that inspired the manga, and not the other way around. However, the manga was released before the anime to catch people’s interest and establish a fanbase for the anime. The manga series debuted in 1994, 10 months before the anime was released. Despite the headstart, the anime caught up to the manga and completely outpaced it. The manga artist, Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, was only able to publish a volume every year and a half because he was dividing his time between projects. As a result, the 14-volume manga was completed in 2013, 17 years after the anime finished airing in 1996.

Dub

When the anime was finished, two films were released to address public demand for an alternate ending. Neon Genesis Evangelion: Death & Rebirth and The End of Evangelion was released in 1997, both directed by Hideaki Anno, who also directed the anime series. Before the movies were released, Hideaki Anno told the fans of the anime to determine their own meanings from the ambiguous ending. In 2007, the first installment of a reboot, a film tetralogy, was released. The first movie in Rebuild of Evangelion was called You Are (Not) Alone, followed by You Can (Not) Advance and You Can (Not) Redo. The fourth and final movie of the series is still in production.
